Custom tooling

My background is in mechanical engineering. I worked in industry for ten years, but never had the opportunity to become deeply involved with the design process. Scaling up manufacturing of CapWorks’ products has required the development of custom machinery; from conception, to prototyping, to testing, and final fabrication. The below tools have dramatically increased throughput while decreasing costs and improving quality.

The Crushinator!

• Flattens a bottle cap with a single motion

• Previous method required a two stage/multi-tool operation; one for splaying the side walls of a cap and the next for actually flattening it.

• 26 custom machined parts (five unique designs) with 3+ machining operations per part

• Seven separate fixtures were required to machine parts on a 3-axis CNC

• Used with a 12-ton hydraulic press

• Decreased cycle time from 12 seconds to 3 seconds
